The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established practical test standards for airline transport pilots (ATPs) and aircraft type ratings. These standards are designed to ensure that pilots have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate aircraft in the airline environment.

Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Practical Test Standards

To obtain an ATP certificate, a pilot must pass a practical test that includes the following elements:

  • Preflight planning and preparation: The pilot must demonstrate their ability to plan and prepare for a flight, including calculating weight and balance, determining fuel requirements, and obtaining weather information.
  • Aircraft systems and performance: The pilot must demonstrate their knowledge of the aircraft's systems and performance, including the effects of different configurations and loading on the aircraft's handling.
  • Normal and abnormal procedures: The pilot must demonstrate their ability to perform normal and abnormal procedures, including engine failures, hydraulic failures, and electrical failures.
  • Instrument procedures: The pilot must demonstrate their ability to fly instrument procedures, including approaches, departures, and holds.
  • Emergency procedures: The pilot must demonstrate their ability to perform emergency procedures, including fire, smoke, and engine failure.

Aircraft Type Rating Practical Test Standards

In addition to the ATP practical test, pilots must also pass a practical test for each type of aircraft they are qualified to fly. The aircraft type rating practical test includes the following elements:

  • Aircraft systems and performance: The pilot must demonstrate their knowledge of the aircraft's systems and performance, including the effects of different configurations and loading on the aircraft's handling.
  • Normal and abnormal procedures: The pilot must demonstrate their ability to perform normal and abnormal procedures, including engine failures, hydraulic failures, and electrical failures.
  • Emergency procedures: The pilot must demonstrate their ability to perform emergency procedures, including fire, smoke, and engine failure.

Preparing for the Practical Test

The best way to prepare for the practical test is to study the FAA's practical test standards and practice flying the aircraft in a variety of conditions. Pilots should also practice with an experienced instructor who can provide feedback and guidance.

Taking the Practical Test

The practical test is conducted by an FAA examiner. The examiner will evaluate the pilot's performance on the test elements and determine whether the pilot has met the standards.

Passing the Practical Test

If the pilot passes the practical test, they will be issued an ATP certificate or an aircraft type rating. The ATP certificate is valid for two years and the aircraft type rating is valid for one year.

Maintaining the ATP Certificate and Aircraft Type Rating

To maintain the ATP certificate and aircraft type rating, pilots must complete recurrent training every six months. The recurrent training must include instruction on the aircraft's systems and performance, normal and abnormal procedures, and emergency procedures.

The FAA's practical test standards for airline transport pilots and aircraft type ratings are designed to ensure that pilots have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate aircraft in the airline environment. By following the standards and practicing with an experienced instructor, pilots can prepare for and pass the practical test and maintain their ATP certificate and aircraft type rating.
