In 1924, Doriot joined General Motors as a junior engineer. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a plant manager in 1927 and a vice president in 1930.

One of Doriot's most important contributions to management theory was the concept of "decentralized operations and centralized control." This concept is based on the idea that businesses can be more efficient and effective if they are organized into decentralized units that are responsible for their own operations. However, these units must be subject to centralized control in order to ensure that they are working towards the common goals of the organization.

Doriot implemented this concept at General Motors by dividing the company into a number of autonomous divisions. Each division was responsible for its own manufacturing, marketing, and sales. However, the divisions were all subject to the control of the central headquarters, which set overall policies and goals.

This decentralized approach allowed GM to become more responsive to customer needs and to make decisions more quickly. It also helped to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Another key concept developed by Doriot is "leadership capital." Leadership capital is the sum of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that a leader possesses. Doriot believed that leadership capital is essential for the success of any organization.

Doriot identified six key elements of leadership capital:

  1. Technical competence: The leader must have the technical knowledge and skills necessary to perform their job effectively.
  2. Conceptual ability: The leader must be able to think strategically and to understand the big picture.
  3. Human relations skills: The leader must be able to build and maintain strong relationships with others.
  4. Decision-making ability: The leader must be able to make sound decisions under pressure.
  5. Communication skills: The leader must be able to communicate effectively with others.
  6. Motivation: The leader must be able to motivate others to achieve their goals.

Doriot believed that leaders can develop their leadership capital through education, training, and experience. He also believed that organizations can help to develop the leadership capital of their employees by providing them with opportunities to learn and grow.

In 1952, Doriot left General Motors to become the founding dean of the Sloan School of Management at MIT. The Sloan School is one of the world's leading business schools.

Doriot's goal for the Sloan School was to create a school that would educate leaders who could make a positive impact on the world. He believed that the school should focus on teaching students the latest management theories and practices. He also believed that the school should provide students with opportunities to learn from experienced business leaders.

Doriot's vision for the Sloan School has been realized. The school is now one of the most respected business schools in the world. It is known for its rigorous academic programs, its world-class faculty, and its commitment to innovation.
