Early Life and Education
Mitt Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 12, 1947. He is the son of George W. Romney, a successful businessman and former governor of Michigan, and Lenore Romney. Romney has four siblings. He grew up in a wealthy family in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills. Romney attended Cranbrook School, an elite private school, and then went on to Brigham Young University, a Mormon university in Provo, Utah. After graduating from BYU, Romney earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Business Career
After graduating from Harvard, Romney went to work for Bain & Company, a Boston-based consulting firm. He quickly rose through the ranks at Bain, becoming a partner in the firm in 1984. In 1990, Romney left Bain to co-found Bain Capital, a private equity firm. Bain Capital became one of the most successful private equity firms in the world, and Romney made a fortune from his investments.
Political Career
Romney entered politics in 1994, when he was elected to the Massachusetts Senate. He served in the state senate for two terms, and in 2002, he was elected governor of Massachusetts. Romney served as governor from 2003 to 2007. During his time as governor, Romney oversaw the implementation of a number of conservative policies, including a tax cut and a school choice program.
In 2008, Romney ran for president of the United States. He won the Republican nomination, but he lost the general election to Barack Obama. Romney ran for president again in 2012, and this time he was the Republican nominee. However, he lost the general election to Obama again.
Political Views
Romney is a conservative Republican. He supports lower taxes, less government regulation, and a strong national defense. Romney is also a social conservative. He opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. Romney is a devout Mormon, and his religious beliefs have a significant influence on his political views.
