Nadine Gordimer's to the Everyman Library Contemporary Classics Series is a meditation on the nature of literature and its role in the world. She argues that literature is not a luxury, but a necessity, and that it has the power to change our lives and the world around us.
Gordimer begins by reflecting on the experience of reading as a child. She remembers being transported to other worlds, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures. Literature, she says, opened her eyes to the possibilities of human experience and helped her to understand her own place in the world.
As an adult, Gordimer has come to appreciate literature even more. She sees it as a way of making sense of the world, of understanding our own motivations and the motivations of others. Literature, she says, can help us to see the world from different perspectives and to challenge our own assumptions.
Gordimer concludes her by urging readers to make time for literature in their lives. She argues that literature is not just a form of entertainment, but a way of enriching our lives and understanding the world around us.
Nadine Gordimer's to the Everyman Library Contemporary Classics Series is a powerful and passionate defense of literature. She argues that literature is not a luxury, but a necessity, and that it has the power to change our lives and the world around us.
About Nadine Gordimer
Nadine Gordimer (1923-2014) was a South African writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. She was born in Springs, South Africa, and grew up in Johannesburg. She began writing at a young age, and her first novel, The Lying Days, was published in 1953. Gordimer's work often explored the themes of race, apartheid, and social justice.
Gordimer was a vocal critic of apartheid, and her work was often banned in South Africa. However, she continued to write, and her work eventually gained international recognition. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991 "for her magnificent epic writing, which in its wide-ranging perspective and with great poetic force has depicted the landscapes of South Africa."
