Early Life and Career
Wayne Errington was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England on June 11, 1954. He began his wrestling career in the early 1970s, wrestling primarily in smaller promotions in the north of England. In 1975, he joined All Star Wrestling, one of the most popular wrestling promotions in the UK at the time. Errington quickly became a fan favorite, thanks to his impressive size and strength, as well as his charismatic personality.
All Star Wrestling
Errington spent several years in All Star Wrestling, becoming one of the promotion's top stars. He held the British Heavyweight Championship on two occasions, and also won the World Heavyweight Championship in 1979. Errington's matches with other top All Star wrestlers such as Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, and Kendo Nagasaki were legendary, and helped to cement his status as one of the UK's most popular wrestlers.
Joint Promotions
In the early 1980s, Errington left All Star Wrestling to join Joint Promotions, another major UK wrestling promotion. He continued to be a top star in Joint Promotions, and won the British Heavyweight Championship for a third time in 1983. Errington also had a memorable feud with "Gorgeous" George Gray, which culminated in a sell-out match at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
World Wrestling Federation
In 1985, Errington signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He made his WWF debut in 1986, under the ring name "Battleground Wayne Errington." Errington was initially portrayed as a heel, but quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his impressive in-ring skills and his charisma. He feuded with some of the WWF's top stars, including Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, and King Kong Bundy.
Errington's most memorable WWF moment came at the 1987 Royal Rumble. He entered the Rumble at number 1, and lasted over an hour before being eliminated by the eventual winner, Hulk Hogan. Errington's performance in the Rumble helped to establish him as one of the WWF's top stars.
Later Career
Errington left the WWF in 1988, and returned to the UK to wrestle for Joint Promotions. He continued to wrestle for several more years, before retiring in the early 1990s. Errington has since made occasional appearances on the independent wrestling circuit.
Legacy
Battleground Wayne Errington is one of the most successful British wrestlers of all time. He held the British Heavyweight Championship on three occasions, and also won the World Heavyweight Championship. Errington was also a popular star in the WWF, and is remembered for his impressive in-ring skills and his charisma. Errington is a true legend of the wrestling business, and his legacy will continue to inspire wrestlers for years to come.
