In this 2011 lecture that he delivered at a Shaw Society meeting, music scholar John Powell presents one of the most thorough and engaging accounts of the life and musical works of George Bernard Shaw. This article is based on that lecture. Powell argues that Shaw was one of the most important music critics of his time and that his writings on music are still relevant today. He also argues that Shaw's own music is often overlooked and that it deserves to be heard and appreciated.

Shaw was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1856. He was the son of a civil servant and a musician. Shaw showed an early interest in music, and he began composing at a young age. However, he did not pursue a career in music until he was in his 30s.

In 1888, Shaw began writing music criticism for. The Star newspaper. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most insightful and provocative music critics of his time. Shaw's criticism was often acerbic, but it was always fair and well-informed. He was not afraid to criticize even the most famous composers, and he often championed the work of unknown composers.

In addition to his work as a music critic, Shaw also wrote several books on music. His most famous book on music is The Perfect Wagnerite, which was published in 1898. In this book, Shaw argues that Wagner's music is the culmination of the Romantic era and that it is the most important music of the 19th century.

Shaw's own music is often overlooked, but it deserves to be heard and appreciated. Shaw composed a variety of works, including operas, symphonies, and chamber music. His music is often characterized by its wit and its melodic beauty.

Shaw died in Ayot St. Lawrence, England, in 1950. He was one of the most important figures in the history of music, and his work continues to be read and performed today.

Here are some of Shaw's most famous quotes on music:

  • "Music is the food of love."
  • "Without music, life would be a mistake."
  • "Music is the universal language of mankind."
  • "Good music is like good wine. It improves with age."
  • "Music is the art of thinking with sound."

Shaw was a passionate advocate for music, and he believed that it has the power to change the world. He once said, "Music is the only art that can raise the soul to heaven."

Shaw's legacy as a music critic and composer is secure. He was one of the most important figures in the history of music, and his work continues to be read and performed today.
